Air bag red warning light on after routine service – Audi A6?

Two days after my audi A6 had a service during which the engine management computer was checked and some error messages erased by my mechanic, the red airbag light came on. My mechanic after consideraton advised I go to the audi dealership .Can the error message be cleared and the airbag sensor be reprogrammed economically without the audi dealership getting involved?

your mechanic should be able to fix it. If he cant, he may not be well knowledged in the vehicle he is working on. This isnt a hard thing to do and if he cant figure this out, you may want to see a new mechanic.

I wouldnt screw around with this, theres a reason the light came on….Take it to the dealer unless you want to have the airbag blow up in your face while youre on the freeway. Good luck and be safe.

most probably a faulty a wire or the machanic might have done something but during a service they shouldnt have touched anything like that. I just think a faulty wire.

yep, but if you took it to someone else they probably messed up something they should not have because they have no idea what they are dealing with, should be under warranty, airbags are not to be messed with, you should take it in, if they charge you bill the bonehead that set it off in the first place

I had the same problem with my car, I had to go to the dealer to get it fixed.
I don’t think the local garage has the equipment or expertise to deal with these type of problems.

Should have taken it to Audi in the first place then you would have a case for redress. Typical – big car on the drive but don’t want to pay to maintain it properly.

Take it back to Audi, it will probabyl cost you an hour’s labour. Quite costly (probably around the £70 mark) but worth it to be done properly by the manufacturer. I’m all in favour of using local garages etc, but on somethign as saftey-critical as the Airbag I wouldn’t mess about if I were you.

    Safe driving :-)

Dealerships aren’t always the best option as they tend to just replace parts and not fix them
if your local mechanic has hand held diagnostics example like a kts or snap on computers its likely that its has a been placed to rest on the steering wheel as a lot have hanging brackets to sit round the wheel.
this can trigger the airbag sensors in the steering wheel known to happen on audis, bmws, volvo and fiats. if your usaul mechanic can not identify the fault try another garage that you can trust to read the fault code and try erase it.
if the problem is still there then this will require new parts
    hope this helps

Well it all depends on what the code is. The dealer is not the only place that can reset the light, try call a couple of VW/Audi independent shops and ask if the have a VAG tool they can check the car with. It could be any thing from a faulty wire to a bad control unit and in most cases universal readers do not do as good a job as the VAG tool. That car has more than just one sensor however if one is bad it can not be reprogrammed only replaced.

Yea I have an S4 and my airbag light is on also…i took it to my mechanic but he didnt know what it was for sure…he said it might have something to do with the catalytic converter or faulty wiring…

Dont worry about it though…my airbag light has been on for over 3 years and it causes no problem

I had an air-bag problem with a Mitsubishi Carisma, turned out the mechanic took a bulb out in the dash, I wasn’t impressed. The problem was with a connection under the drivers seat. I wouldn’t have known only for a second opinion from another mechanic. Get a second or third opinion.
